We study magma: how and why it forms, its composition and timescales, and the resulting consequences for planetary differentiation. We do this through examining volcanoes and their magma source regions, conducting high pressure and temperature experiments to simulate magma formation in the lab, and computational modeling of magmatic processes.
EPIC includes a state of the art lab for the petrologic investigation of natural and experimental igneous rocks under the direction of Prof. Christy Till, which is home to several Kennedy and Boyd & England style end-loaded piston cylinders and one atmosphere gas mixing furnaces for studies up to 4 GPa & 2000°C.
EPIC works in concert with the other ASU Facilities and scientists to facilitate petrologic investigations to pressures in excess of 20 GPa and in-situ chemical and isotopic analyses down to the sub-micron scale.
